I have been a substitute teacher since 2005 for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.

What I love most about teaching is each and every single student I meet, especially the BAD ONES! They think they have it so bad! And some of them do! Well, I can relate. I rarely send kids to the principal's office. Instead I wield my strength, experience, and cunning wit and face them HEAD ON! High school kids are the worst! Besides the kids in FIRST! Grade that is... They fight over the stupidest things!

Teaching is difficult when you get thrown into the middle of subjects which aren't your strong point, or say, when the teacher has been gone for weeks and the students have already run off a handful of other stand-ins. My favorite part of the job is that I am virtually un-fire-able since I rarely have to go to the same school for more than a week at a time and I think there is also a shortage of good help.

But I always wanted to be a teacher. Subbing is the greatest because I can't seem to beg my way into grading homework. I think it's for consistency's sake, which makes sense. So I show up, keep the peace, inspire the youth, and go home. Rinse, Repeat. I'm glad my heart was designed the way it was otherwise there might be more knots and nots instead of Yes We Can's! I insist on efficiency and classroom enjoyment. My dad once said "Homework is not for HOME!" So I demand respect of self, others, and try to obey that ONE simple, nonsensical rule... (which is less philosophical than it is parent-thetical...)

No child left behind. All kids nurtured, healed and trained to contribute in their respective giftings. Regardless of race, social class, gender, IQ, or irritability! Yeah that's right!
